- Description: A historic home defeat, a sputtering attack and mounting frustration. Ari Liljenwall takes fan calls after Seattle's 1-0 loss to Houston Dynamo FC, debating the Sounders' late-season struggles and whether it's time to accept that 2026 just might not be their year.

**Seattle Sounders 0-1 Houston Dynamo FC** · MLS regular season, Matchday 33 · Lumen Field, Wednesday, Oct. 28 · Goals: Lucas Halter 26' (HOU) · Seattle now 8th in the West on 43 points.

Twenty-one shots, 70% possession and nothing to show for it. Seattle dominated the ball but couldn't break through against a Houston side that scored on their only shot on target. The calls ranged from outrage to optimism, with an unexpected third option emerging: achieving nirvana and accepting this season for what it is.

## What fans said

**Achieving nirvana.** Mar10 (Martin) echoed Ari's postgame sentiment about reaching a point of acceptance. After a promising start to the season, injuries and an extended summer slump have made Martin reluctant to write off the Sounders entirely. But he's looking toward a healthier roster and future reinforcements rather than dwelling on what might have been.

**Where has the attack gone?** Seattle outshot Houston 21-2 but struggled to turn possession into dangerous chances consistently. The conversation turned to the lack of dynamism out wide, the difficulty of getting Dejan Joveljić quality service and how much Pedro de la Vega's absence has limited Seattle's attacking ceiling.

**Tribe isn't buying it.** While some callers were finding peace with the Sounders' struggles, Tribe wasn't ready to lower his expectations. He questioned why a roster with this much talent keeps underperforming and whether the coaching staff is getting enough out of its available pieces. For Tribe, the possibility of a playoff run isn't the same as having reason to believe one is coming.

**The rampage lives.** Caleb provided the night's most optimistic counterpoint, doubling down on his belief that Seattle can still turn things around. He's banking on Brian Schmetzer's ability to motivate the squad over the final two regular-season games and into the playoffs. The rest of the fanbase might be losing faith, but Caleb's rampage prediction remains alive.

## The take that's right

Martin's nirvana argument might be the healthiest way to approach the rest of this season.

That doesn't mean accepting mediocrity or pretending the Sounders' struggles aren't concerning. It means recognizing the difference between what this team is theoretically capable of and what it has consistently shown on the field.

Seattle have enough talent to beat good teams, and MLS is unpredictable enough that a postseason turnaround can't be ruled out. But after a summer collapse and another damaging home defeat, there's little evidence to suggest a deep playoff run is the expectation.

If the Sounders find another gear, great. If not, the focus shifts toward getting healthy, addressing the roster's shortcomings and building something more convincing for the future.

## What it means for Vancouver

**Next up: Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Sunday, Nov. 1, 12:30 pm PT at BC Place.**

Seattle heads north with playoff position under serious pressure, sitting eighth in the West on 43 points with two regular-season games remaining. The Sounders need more than another possession-heavy performance against the conference leaders. They need sharper movement, better service into Joveljić and a level of attacking urgency that was missing against Houston.

With LAFC waiting in the regular-season finale, there's little margin for error. The question is whether Seattle can rediscover the form that made a postseason run seem plausible in the first place.
